Hon. Okey Joe Foundation, in collaboration with the African Left Handers Confederation Initiative, hosted the 2024 International Left Handers Day themed “Left Handed & Rightly So.” Held online on August 13, the event featured notable speakers and panelists from across Africa and beyond, discussing inclusivity, advocacy, and celebrating the unique talents of left-handers.
The Hon. Okey Joe (HOJ) Foundation, in collaboration with the African Left Handers Confederation Initiative, successfully hosted the 2024 International Left Handers Day with the theme, “Left Handed & Rightly So.” This event, held online via Google Meet on August 13, 2024, brought together a diverse range of speakers and panelists from across Africa and beyond to celebrate and advocate for left-handed individuals.
The program aimed to raise awareness about the unique experiences of left-handed individuals and to promote the need for inclusion, understanding, and support for left-handers in society. The event highlighted the challenges and advantages of left-handedness while emphasizing the importance of embracing differences.
The event featured distinguished speakers and panelists who shared their perspectives and experiences as left-handers. The keynote speaker, Mr. Onyenume Sunday, Interim President of the African Left Handers Confederation Initiative (Nigeria), delivered a thought-provoking address on the social and cultural perceptions of left-handedness across the continent. He highlighted the significance of fostering an environment where left-handers feel accepted and valued.
Yeye Adesola Oyinloye-Ndu, Convener of the Lefties & Ambidextrous Care Initiative (Nigeria), also spoke at the event, focusing on the importance of creating educational and societal systems that cater to the needs of left-handed individuals. She called for increased advocacy to dismantle long-held stigmas surrounding left-handedness, especially in academic and professional environments.

The theme, “Left Handed & Rightly So,” reinforced the message that left-handed individuals are as capable and talented as their right-handed counterparts, deserving of equal opportunities and recognition. Speakers and panelists explored how left-handers can overcome biases and build successful careers, noting famous left-handers in history and contemporary times who have excelled in various fields, including politics, sports, and the arts.
Hon. Prince Okey-Joe Jesse Onuakalusi, the founder of the HOJ Foundation, expressed his commitment to ensuring that the foundation continues to support efforts that foster inclusivity and understanding. He praised the collaboration with the African Left Handers Confederation Initiative, noting that such events are essential to creating an equitable society.
